Not a picture, but a path of soul language

How do we become familiar with expression and soul language?

We will engage in two processes that give us some direction in this quest.

1. We will make marks all week noting the difference between our personal response to dry materials (charcoal, pencil, crayon) and wet materials (ink, watercolor, gouache).
2. Meditation and body awareness will enable us to become more acquainted with the primary instrument of creating - the dynamic fusion of our own body/mind/spirit.
As we develop our sense of presence and awareness through these exercises we will become more comfortable and familiar with intuitive expression and the language of our own soul.

The result will be a portfolio of marks that are seeds for further exploration. The exercises will have the potential to help us develop work patterns that can ground us in joyful practice.

Let's refresh our beginner's mind, be willing to learn from and teach our fellow traveler, and leave with a process in place to continue the practice and pleasure of expressing our energy intuitively and directly.

Watchful Experimenting and the Fine Art of Controlled Scribbling

In this workshop, we will leave behind the set of rules of traditional lay-out, as these rules may paralyze or confine the student, who wants to leave the beaten paths of calligraphy.
A series of purposeful exercises will show how, by fearless experiments, we can arrive at new and original compositions. We will see that the proposed way of working allows us to stay attentive to what happens on the paper and will prompt us to find solutions for problems that appear. One option is layering and the use of gesso, which we will explore. Gradually, we will sharpen our graphic eye and learn about the hidden rules of experimental layout.
We will look for the unexpected and the daring in our compositions  and also in our writing. We will try to avoid the obvious while focusing on experimental, free writing - which is not as free and careless as it may look. Even in mere scribbling there are qualities to appreciate.

All this time, we will endeavour to reduce the cute-factor of our work in favour of authenticity, a key-goal in contemporary art.
