From start to finish:
From inspiration to conception, from development to execution you will complete the process of creating a book. We will develop the idea for a finished work, focusing on making content and book design be a cohesive whole. The beginning of the week will be devoted to designing and executing our text blocks. We will create our pages through a series of design exercises incorporating our chosen subject matter. There will be experimentation with page layout, text, illustration and collage techniques. After completion of our text blocks we will design a binding using paste papers that have been made especially for this project. Innovative techniques of creating paste papers will be introduced. Finally we complete our week executing a simple style binding.
Students are asked to come prepared with an idea for content of their book, ie. a personal story, a group of poems, a collection of images, etc
There will be a materials list.
Contact: Jim Teta for info and registration.

2 lines interacting:
There is the line, there is the letter. Somewhere in between, there are: just 2 lines interacting.
In this class I want to balance the moving free line with the controlled line; and I want to combine both into a composition. (A book or at least a book page.) I want to combine practice, exploration and the making a compostion into one class. You can hang in any one area if you please or you can complete the circuit.
There will be 2 main approaches and goals: 1.Using brushes to explore lines and relationships while moving our bodies; (continuing themes begun in my 2 previous Cheerio sessions). 2. Then anchoring our work with readable letterforms; working with smaller text blocks in capitals in a more controlled way. The capitals will be everything but formal. We can develop expressive capitals that can be used as a text for a book or for shorter texts. Refined and/ or practical approaches that have a lower threshold technically will be featured.
We will essentially be exploring moving line vs. structured line and playing the 2 energies off of each other. The freedom we experience with the brush will be more meaningful if we counterbalance it with the discipline of writing with the pen and think how we will use each. On many levels, there will be interactions and we can develop our overall sensitivity to these forces to become more aware artists and calligraphers.
Capitals and cursive are 2 of the most important structures. Interaction is what happens between them. We are going to practice our calligraphy and develop our awareness of these important elements. If we are lucky, we will have a book by Friday.
