Calligraphy Centre was started in Winston-Salem, NC by Joyce Teta in the 1980's for doing commissions and teaching calligraphy. Joyce & Jim Teta founded Cheerio Calligraphy Retreats in 1984 to bring the teaching of the best calligraphers to the NC area. John Stevens joined on as an advisor after visiting as a teacher in 1988. Today, Cheerio is a world-known Calligraphy teaching facility with many of the top calligraphers and book-artists conducting workshops twice a year for students who have traveled from far-away places like Japan, Hong Kong, Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe (as well as the 50 United States).
