Peter Thornton & Thomas Hoyer

Peter Thornton:
Gold, Vellum, Quills & Design

The aims of this workshop are to bring together two or three processes of laying gold leaf onto vellum/paper using quills and metal pens. Each of these processes will be discussed and demonstrated in a gentle and logical order, hopefully clarifying that gilding is neither the ‘high altar’ of calligraphy nor some precious or mystical act to be done on a full moon in secrecy. Along with the gilding process we shall look at Built-Up letters and some variants in a final and cohesive project using gold leaf and color on vellum or paper. A feature of the course will be to show some of the modern and simpler gesso binders and some contemporary methods of application, along with the time proven traditional gesso.

Thomas Hoyer:
Ruling Pens Beyond the Rules

Students will learn a freestyle method of using the ruling pen. This kind of writing springs from the sensitive balance of speed and control, and produces uniquely lively, animated letterforms. In this course, participants will be introduced to several types of ruling pens, and will have the opportunity to experiment with the great variety of strokes that are possible with these instruments. We will begin by learning how to use the ruling pen to write a simple italic script. The participants will learn how to use the unique variety of strokes of the ruling pen to create a wide range of different textures. Each participant will choose a word or a short quote which (s)he wishes to design. The only rule is: There is no rule. This script will have no consistent baseline, no equal heights, widths, proportions in the single letters; no equal width of the stroke. Have fun!
