Brush-writing; yet another tool in our calligraphy arsenal.
This class is an intro to the brush aimed at beginners (yet open to all levels, ) those with some experience/knowledge who want to try on something new), giving you a new way to make/ see letters and learn some new techniques.
The broad-edged brush will be the featured tool and capitals will be the primary forms, with plenty of practice, exploration and fun into some of the many things the brush can do. You will even look at your italic differently! The brush imparts a character on letters that will be explored. The week can be used to work with capitals only or try many different forms of brush writing.
You will learn; how brush letters differ from pen letters and where they overlap. Technical aspects like: brush hold, palette, key strokes, manipulation and an intro to the subtleties of calligraphy via the strength and nuance of capitals and their variations will also be examined. If time allows, experimentation and projects. The brush offers some practical benefits over the pen: the ability to write on almost any surface like the roughest papers or papers that are absorbent or resist ink from a pen.
Writing large is another useful benefit.
For the beginner an introduction to a new tool and ideas for making letters, for the more advanced- refinement on solid forms, analysis, techniques and variations.
There will be demos, critique and projects.
