Decorative techniques (for books, bindings or boxes)
The week will be spent exploring ideas and techniques that can be applied to many different types of binding projects: Bindings in leather, cloth, paper, boxes, photo albums, journals or applied to box making, collages, etc.
Some of the materials we will work with will be the usual or the unusual; egg shells, leather, paper, (decorative and plain) cloth, and any that you may want to bring to this workshop. Some of the topics: Lacquered eggshell on leather or paper, Covering with pieces of leather, “Lacunose”, Sunken stones or flat object, Raised shapes, Inlays, onlays, tooling…
The participants can work on plaquettes or on bindings that are already covered in leather or cloth. We will build on techniques that we have done in the past at Cheerio AND new techniques we have not done. You can bring a text block ready for covering, so that we can focus on the finished binding or you can build a box.
The class will be open to all levels -the design techniques can be applied to box making, collages as well as bookbinding. Many demonstrations and examples of the creative possibilities with design bindings.
