IN SEARCH OF THE NEW…
Some givens….Hans-Joachim Burgert's "Calligraphy is concerned with the creation of a sequence and arrangement of forms;" John Cage's "Arts purpose is to sober and quiet the mind" and "rather than changing something you don't like, change yourself;" and finally from Sol LeWitt, "to leave oneself open to new experience one's mind must be open to make an illogical choice and then to follow it through to its conclusion." Logical or illogical, these thoughts form the foundation for the weeks' work.
Collaborative class experiments will guide a research into three areas of concern. In one we will attempt to define new and unique starting points for the creation of letterforms. In a second area, we will discuss the role of words in the development of our work including ideas for creating our own texts. And finally we will attempt to make a synthesis of these two areas through an examination of various word/image and visual/verbal concepts. Investigating the links between music, poetry, painting, and calligraphy will enhance our research.
The final goal of the class will be for each student to create a document that is a summary of the week's collaboration.
