John Stevens | BRUSH+ROMAN II

Intro & continuation of the handling of the broad-edged brush from the perspective of Roman Capitals & Miniscules. Following up on the Brush+roman class I did in March 2004, we will begin with a brief review of brush-handling and the caps. Next, we move into the miniscules that are related to the caps. My belief that calligraphers need an integrated capital, miniscule, & cursive “family” will be addressed this week and during this week we will observe 3 themes:
A. Brush & its influence on letterform, B. brush as versatile tool, C. integration of seemingly disparate sources. (Caps and Miniscules have different origins)
If time and interest allows, variations will be explored, (depending upon the level of class), in addition, we may explore some italic forms and numerals. The brush naturally lends an organic quality usually difficult to attain by other means, and is a foundation (as are roman capitals) to the “disciplined freedom” aspect that is so important and desired in calligraphy. Benefits (of brush) include: the ability to write on virtually any surface, (walls, glass, stone, fabric, canvas) and writing large, with a variety of media. One could easily write on walls, wherein it would be difficult to do with a pen. Adding this technique provides us with a range of possibilities in both formal language and the development of our technical repertoire. A week to practice and focus on your skills and understanding of the calligraphic art form. If time permits, a project will be undertaken.

Monique Lallier | Bookbinding Class : discovery & craftsmanship

In this week-long workshop participants will be immersed in a overview / review of the major techniques and structures of bookbinding presented by a highly experienced, world-renowned bookbinder. This is a class for all levels of experience, whether you are advanced or you are a beginner and willing to learn proper tools and technique. A series of book structures & techniques, (closed and open spine) and focused projects ie: a journal, a photo album, an elective… will be the vehicle for you to develop skills, learn techniques and get to see how a master bookbinder handles her craft.
We will use decorative papers, (marbled, paste, Asco-color, etc), leather, suede, single board, double board, sewing, & gluing. As with all of Monique's classes, you will emerge a better bookbinder with a better understanding of the possiblites that bookarts can offer you.
