John Stevens is a calligrapher, lettering artist & graphic designer as well as the creator of this website. Although his first loyalty will always be to the pen, brush, ink & paper, he is proficient in the digital realm as well.
John has created custom calligraphy, logotypes & illustrative lettering designs for clients in book & magazine publishing, ad agencies, packaging firms, television & film, corporations & educational institutions.
In addition to the graphics application of his work, John has practiced calligraphy as an art form (strictly for his own amusement) & has produced one-of-a-kind commissioned pieces for many years. His work is part of many private and public collections throughout the world, and he has had several solo exhibitions, including"Writing Considered As an Art" at The San Francisco Public Library in 1987 as well as many group exhibitions.

Invitations to teach his craft have brought John to many cities throughout the United States and several excursions to Europe. His first International Calligraphy Conference in Minnesota / 1984, Workshops in San Francisco / 1987, his first Cheerio in North Carolina / 1988 and The Schreibwerkstatt in Germany / 1991 are among highlights of his teaching career.
John would like to teach in Italy some day (where he would finally have access to the many Roman inscriptions that have been so influential), Hawaii (for obvious reasons) and in England during Wimbledon. (Payment would be a seat at centre court, of course.)
John's work can be viewed in many of the books, anthologies, exhibition catalogues & journals on the subject of calligraphy and / or lettering design. He has also designed and self-published two 32-page booklets of his work:
Characters with Character / 1991 & Calligraphy & Lettering /1993.
