Portfolios and Boxes

Students will learn to make boxes & portfolios for their books, papers, artwork, calligraphy, photos, etc. You can bring a book, a collection of paper, an object or whatever you want to put in a box or a portfolio. Paper, cloth and/or leather will be shown and students can work in any or all of the materials. Monique will have some leather and paring machines available, but you can bring your own as well. Some experience with leather is preferable, but you can learn the different boxes using cloth and paper for covering as well. You will have time to do one portfolio and two or three boxes depending on your skills and the time you want to work.

Contemporary Decorated Letter Quest

Whether simple or elaborate, a decorated letter can act as an illustration for your text, set the stage and prepare the reader or inform us of your views and feelings. How much can one
letter convey? Which styles of decorated letters delight your eye? Do you prefer a sophisticated, lyrical, wild, weird, or whimsical approach? You will come away from this workshop with a multitude of choices and approaches. We will create letter pictures in the venerable tradition of the decorated letter using today’s techniques and materials, and with your unique vision. Through a series of structured exercises and assignments, you will create letters that require obsessive detailing, formal patterns, abstract design, quixotic scribbles, and pictorial illustration. Demonstrations , examples, and slides designed to ignite your imagination.
