Introduction to Lettering in Stone III | Tom Perkins
A rare opportunity to study lettercarving with a master, Tom Perkins will lead us through the methods & practice of designing a small inscriptions and carving them into slate or stone. Through example and demonstration, students will get a rare insight into the step-by step process of this beautiful art. Subjects: design, transfer to stone, tools, working methods & proper technique & practice, the qualities of fine lettering and inscriptions. There will be Tom’s excellent work to draw inspiration from in the form of handouts and slides. There will be a materials fee- more details to come.

Italic & Capitals in their many guises | Gaynor Goffe
Course participants can select from a wide range of italics, including basic, sharpened, pressure and release, developing rhythm, exploring a range of cursives, and flourish design. Capitals will include basic Roman and italics, flourished capitals, pressure and release capitals, and a wide range of experimental capitals. Selected scripts will be used in a variety of exercises and projects exploring writing textures, and including colour in the pen and background. Suitable for all levels - beginner to advanced.

About the tutors

Tom Perkins is one of the most influential designer-craftsmen working in the field of carved lettering in stone and slate today. His highly individual work is much sought after and has been exhibited and sold in exhibitions at Sotheby's, Bonhams and The Gallery in Cork Street, London. He designs and uses his own letterforms in all his work which includes carved inscriptions (using a wide variety of British stones and slates), lettering for graphics and painted lettering in buildings. His work has been exhibited both in the U.K. and abroad and he has recently completed a large opening plaque for the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

Gaynor Goffe has worked with calligraphy since 1974. She studied calligraphy, illumination and heraldry at Reigate School of Art and Design with Anthony Wood and was Assistant to Donald Jackson for 3 years. She taught on the calligraphy courses at the Roehampton Institute for 17 years, and on the HND Lettering course at Reigate School of Art & Design. Started calligraphy at Adult Education classes with Ann Hechle and David Williams. Gaynor has written two calligraphy books: 'Calligraphy Made Easy' Parragon/Robinson and 'Calligraphy Step-by-Step' ( with Anna Ravenscroft) Harper-Collins ( titled 'Calligraphy School' overseas). A Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society and one of the examiners for the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society's National Diplomas in Calligraphy. Gaynor is particularly interested in the more personal, creative aspect of calligraphy, working with painted backgrounds, gold leaf and collage, and experimenting with capitals and cursive scripts.
Both artists’ works have been published extensively in many publications and anthologies of calligraphy.
